My 4th great grandfather Abraham Childers
was born in Buckingham Co., VA, but was raised in Amherst County Virginia.
He was the oldest of 6 known children of
Henry and Susannah Goldsby Childers.
he married Elizabeth “Betsy” Roberts and had 10 children.
On May 6, 1849, he was laid to rest in then Letcher County,
(now Knott County) KY in a cemetery on Breeding Creek of Carr Fork.
Abraham Childers served during the American Revolution under in the Continental Line from Virginia, from about June 1777 until shortly after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781. For the first 18 months of his service he was a cook under General George Washington. He fought in battles at Jamestown, Morbin Hill, and Brandywine. After a long and honorable life, he died in May of 1849, just a few months short of being one hundred years old. Recently, a military tombstone was placed at the site of his grave marking his participation in the American Revolution.
